Shiatsu, which literally means ‘finger pressure’, is a form of bodywork therapy that originated in Japan. Like acupuncture, to which it is closely related, it is rooted in the ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The body’s vital energy or Ki flows along specific pathways through the body, known as Meridians. Each Meridian is associated with an internal organ after which it is named, for example the Stomach Meridian or Heart Meridian.
During a treatment the practitioner applies pressure along these Meridians using fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows and sometimes knees. Pressure is also applied to specific Acupressure Points located along the paths of the Meridians. This has the effect of releasing and balancing the flow of Ki within the whole body effectively stimulating the body’s own healing response.
Shiatsu is traditionally performed with the client lying on a futon mat on the floor, although it can also be effectively done using a massage table. The client remains fully clothed thoughout.
